In the United States, roughly 43% of maintenance calls on PV systems are due to inverter malfunctions, as found in a 2020 data survey conducted by NREL.

Additionally, 35% of measured yield losses are due to inverter failures. On the front end, this issue calls for the development of longer lasting inverters. On the back end, inverters will always need repair or replacing to optimize their performance, regardless of the length of their lifespans, as is true for all technological devices.
